MUSEUM EXHIBITION IN THE PROCESS OF CONSTRUCTING HISTORICAL KNOWLEDGE

Abstract

Museum exhibition not only display objects, it tells the stories behind them, brings the ideas and concepts which were the source of their creation. The fundamental aspect of museum exhibitions is to create a space where the process of interpretation and conferring of a meaning will occur as an essential “content” of the museum. Therefore the overriding aim of this paper is to provide specific example of the role of museum exhibition in the process of constructing historical knowledge, based on the uniqueness of casus from the history of National Gallery of Denmark. That is why the paper include reflection on the circumstances of shaping first public gallery of art in Denmark and the process of creation the canon of Danish national art in the period called Danish Golden Age. The historical context of the paper is related to the first half of 19th Century which was the time when Denmark lost its status as a powerful and prosperous kingdom as a result of a military conflict with England, the loss of Norway and the deepening economic crisis. However, at the same time the political and social factors affected the process of dynamic development of art and architecture. Within artistic circles arose, an unparalleled in its scale, need for expression of the national history and heritage through the visual medium. In the same historical moment appeared the process of reinterpretation the national identity, the birth of the idea of national art connected with dynamic development of arts, and finally establishment of National Gallery of Denmark where the newly formed canon of national art was first presented to the public.
