MOSAIC RESCUE AND RESTORATION AS A MISSION (POSSIBLE)
Abstract
The goal of this paper is to point out some of the mosaic monuments in the Czech Republic as a casuistry of rescue actions and restoration treatments as a response to frequent ignorance or in utmost cases the demolition of mosaic art. Despite a slowly increasing interest in mosaic heritage in recent years the full recognition of mosaics, including the ones from the communist era, as a valuable legacy of the past, still has not taken place. For this purpose the association Art a Craft Mozaika was founded in 2012. Within its existence the association managed to save and conserve dozens of mosaics (from the 19th century to more modern pieces). This article presents an elementary compendium of the history of mosaic art in the Czech Republic from the first (and for a long time the only) medieval mosaic work with the theme of the Last Judgment at the Cathedral of St. Vitus, to the transformation of mosaics and innovations throughout the 20th century with a simple evaluation of the current situation.
