THE BRANCOVAN STYLE – A VEIN OF ROMANIAN ART
Abstract
During the reign of Constantin Brancoveanu, remarkable achievements were recorded in architecture and painting. We shall meet the values of art and architecture in our country, in general, and especially those of the age of Saint Constantin Brancoveanu, which has left its mark not just on the territory in Muntenia, as it also penetrated in Transylvania, crossed the Romanian western boundaries into Serbia and went up to Bessarabia. Today, the art of Brancoveanu’s epoch is brought again to light by the monuments that are being restored. The artistic period pertaining to the Brancovenesc epoch was one of renaissance for the Romanian culture, due to the transformations in architecture, painting, music and many others. We, the Romanians, have continued the Byzantine art through the art pertaining to Brancoveanu’s epoch and then we should be aware of these values, because this art is an innovation, namely it shows the existence of a dynamism in the religious artistic creation. Rich with achievements from all areas, the Brancovan style is characterized through clear and balanced compositions, having a classical structure which allowed to set off a topic about the Renaissance in Romanian art.
