Abstract

The article deals with the precedent name "Napoleon" which is regarded as an element of historical memory, a national cultural code. The aim of the work is the semantic-cognitive modeling of this precedent name in a comparative aspect. Analyzing different contexts containing the name "Napoleon" / "NapolГ©on" we apply methodologies of semantic cognitive modeling, supplemented with contextual and statistical analysis. The analysis revealed a semantic-cognitive model of the precedent name "Napoleon" / "NapolГ©on" functioning in Russian and French media. The model is represented by a structured complex of differential features of the precedent name under consideration, taking into account both denotative and connotative (metaphorical) uses, and reflects the variety of ideas about this historical figure manifested in the Russian and French media discourses. The analysis revealed that most often social (an outstanding statesman, a bright-minded military leader) and personal characteristics of Napoleon (an extraordinary, charismatic, ambitious person) are profiled. All the differences are concentrated in profiling of some social and everyday aspects; they reflect the specific perception of the personality of Napoleon and its evaluation in the Russian and French national consciousness.
