Abstract

The global village, in the hyper-metropolises - that form its sub-centres - in which there now lives almost a third of the world's population, with over half living in cities overall - demands its built environment to be constructed with newer and newer technologies. This also requires innovative thinking about the form of future cities. Increasing the effectiveness of land use, accomplished through constructing even taller building, is associated with the struggle between their structures and the destructive impact of nature - ranging from earthquakes and tsunamis to climate change. The manner of designing cities and buildings for a global village demands adapting proper technologies to the scales on which human dwellings are being built. This applies to both entire metropolises and individual apartments, both in cities and in the country. Technologies, however, should not lead to a loss of the landscape's qualities, nor to the unification of the architectural forms of cities, erasing their local colour.
