PERSPECTIVES OF INTEGRATED MOVABILITY THE ITALIAN RAILWAY SYSTEM IN THE CONTEST OF THE EUROPEAN LIBERALIZATION
Abstract
The present contribution wants to show the main features and the focus points of the recent evolution of the Italian railway, so to introduce the reasons underneath its present “high speed” and its perspectives of development in the European space. On a methodological point of view, this essay is based on normative and quantity data concerning the Italian and European situation. This give us the chance to better comprehend the reasons between the produced connection and the railway system of each member state, essential element for the constitution of an integrated European space. The research starts from the consideration that in the nineties of the twentieth century, the European railway sector has been characterized by a process of liberalization and privatization to rationalize the market and to introduce elements of competition in a part generally structured on a monopolistic basis and on a strong presence of the public operator. A liberalization process through which the European Union aims to facilitate the realization of a united system of transport in the transnational connection can’t be excluded from a properly coordinated European engagement that every single state must assume. Therefore it is important to understand the degree of integration of Italy in the organization of European space even through an analysis of its railway system, a real strategic way to connect with the wide European Horizon.
