DIFFERENT UNDERSTANDING OF INDEPENDENT LITERATURE IN CZECH, POLISH AND RUSSIAN CULTURAL CONTEXTS
Abstract
During my numerous research and teaching stays at the universities in Great Britain, Poland, Romania and Bulgaria I was asked to speak about Czech independent literature which existed under the communist regime (1948-1989). As an author of a monograph about Czech literary underground (1999) and many studies on this topic, I expected that it would be easy for me. Nevertheless, I soon came to the conclusion that translation of basic terms connected with independent culture is not only a matter of linguistic ability and that one cannot avoid using the methods of comparative literary studies. In this paper I am going to focus on the words samizdat and underground and their rather different meaning in Czech, Polish, and Russian languages. The description of Czech terminology is based on my own research, in comparing Czech and Polish terms I was inspired especially by the studies of Bogus?aw Baku?a (Adam Mickiewicz University in Pozna?), and as to Russian literary milieu I am quoting from the monograph written by Robert Porter (University of Glasgow), the leading British expert in Russian prose and its translator.
