SEARCHING FOR GREATGRANDMOTHERS. ANNA TENENBAUM

Abstract

I would like to present the biography and thought of Anna Tenenbaum (born 22nd of December 1900). Anna Tenenbaum was one of the first women students at the Jagiellonian University who were officially allowed to study. Although, as a Jewish women, she was discriminated, she successfully finished her studies and made PhD. in philosophy in 1926 and even started to work at the university. She did a PhD in strict philosophy and the topic of her dissertation was devoted to Descartes – ‘Psychologia zwierzeca u Descartesa’ – ‘Psychology of Animals in Descartes’ Thought.’ Her text was partly published in 1929 as Descartes i jego bete-machine – Decsartes and his bete-machine in a Polish journal - Philosophical Review. I will present and analyze this paper. Then she started to work in the Department of Psychogenetics at the Jagiellonian University developing her interests in nature and natural history. She received permission for teaching natural history and geography. She conducted innovative research on aphids which I will also present. The access to Anna Tenenbaum’s works is very limited because her pieces are protected by copyright law (the issue of orphan works). This article is a part of a project regarding a women contribution to science and humanities.
