OBJECTS OF EXCLUSION: A KIND OF POPULAR DESIGN AS PREDICATE OF SURVIVAL
Abstract
The mood for the imagination and inventiveness in Brazil recreates every moment many other "Brazils" that retake and reinvent traditions, weaving an amalgamated diversity with a false idea of festivity and affection among transitions, courage and hope that often suggests a prosaic grace and spontaneity. This "brazilianness" that apparently renews and enriches our material culture is highlighted here under a focus on curious objects made of recontextualized materials in the main urban centers as a result of a cruel process of social exclusion. It is a world that bears a completely different design that could be labeled as good design in where artifacts gain contours as companions of simple everyday experiences in urban life, while capturing the relationship between individual and object transformed into a predicate of survival. The aim of this study draws attention more specifically to the recontextualization processes of waste materials by the less favored categories of major urban centers due to the process of social exclusion where material shortage is identified as a motivating factor for inventiveness of individuals in a real kind of peculiar and popular design. The here problematized issue that transfigured the "brazilian way" under an empiricist glimpse, registers unusual ways of dealing with situations arising from a sad example of the social gap of urban material culture when it uses initiatives fused into the informality and marginality of the consumer society insofar as it subverts the artifacts in their original processes of use in curious assemblages, by combining and adding new functions. The improvisation of truly spontaneous and intuitive solutions, in which objects connect individuals with their realities through unconventional techniques, or even with their total absence, exposes this approach in which artifacts and subjects convey a mix that provides new meanings and renewed reflections about a physical universe of a kind of social exclusion process still present in the daily life of many brazilian cities.
