PERCEPTION OF RUSSIAN LITERATURE IN LATVIAN SOCIETY

Abstract

The article attempts to consider the ways the persistent perceptions of Russian literature by Latvian inhabitants have been formed and developed. Russian literature has been part of Latvian cultural landscape for a long time. Its perception in Latvian society is heterogeneous and changeable both in the temporal and in the socio-cultural aspect. First, when studying the specifics of the perception of Russian literature in Latvian society, it is necessary to take into account the stages and characteristics of the formation of Russian-Latvian literary ties: both the occurrence of the phenomena of Russian literature in Latvian culture and the existence of literature in Russian in the territory of Latvia, as well as the complex interaction of these processes. Secondly, it is worth taking into account the inhomogeneous structure of Latvian society, since for its different ethnic groups the status of Russian literature is different: it can be perceived as a phenomenon of foreign or native literature, as part of a universal classical heritage, essentially non-national, encompassing universal human values, and as phenomenon that reflects the specific features of national identity, and, therefore, is interesting precisely by this specificity. In addition, the level of Russian literature is different as well: on the one hand, this is the level of precedent names, which is reflected, for instance, in the names of streets or cultural institutions, on the other – part of the reading culture of various groups of Latvian society. Thus, the perception of Russian literature in Latvian society has a complex structure and depends on a number of historical and sociocultural factors.
