HUMAN AND TIME - LINGUISTIC CONSCIOUSNESS OF OLD BELIEVERS

Abstract

The category of time is interesting for representatives of various research fields. Time is referred to space, world of objects, and motion. Human, by referring to time, makes it anthropologic and brings in an axiological aspect. Time from the position of personality is a subjective category. The present paper is a study of subjective notions of time held by Old Believers, a sub-ethnos or ethno-confessional group of Old Believers living on the territory of Latvia since the 17th century, after the church schism in 1666. The studies of history, language, and culture of Old Believers in Latgale have been carried out at Daugavpils University for more than 30 years. The present paper is devoted to the investigation of individual worldview, focussing on human’s linguistic consciousness and relates of the life course of a human. It examines the spoken traditions of present-day Old Believers of Latgale who represent the traditional culture based on their oral narratives and their subjective sense of time. The research is based on the field notes materials.
