LIFT TO THE PAST. MUSEALISATION OF THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE IN THE FORM OF A DYNAMIC ARTISTIC INSTALLATION

Abstract

The Faculty of Architecture of the Cracow University of Technology has been operating in the adapted building of the Cadet School since. Previously, it was the headquarters of the Kadetten Institute, built in the mid-nineteenth century during the Habsburg Monarchy, on the remains of the former, representative summer residence of Polish kings - in the village of Lobzow near Cracow. Within the walls of this architectural monument are also the remains of a medieval castellum built in 1375 by King Casimir the Great. In 2015, preparing the construction of the elevator in the eastern wing, there were relics of a huge defensive wall and traces of the residential tower from the times of Casimir the Great and the walls of the mannerist Santi Gucci set on them. The authorities of the Faculty of Architecture in agreement with the Provincial Conservator of Monuments, decided to transform this "archeological site" into a museum exhibition - concerning the oldest relics of the foundation, not only of scientific and historical value, but also educational, at the university educating future architects. The exhibition was given the form of a dynamic artistic installation with a glass elevator cabin, from which one can watch the sequence of stylized graphic images simulating a journey in time: into the architectural past of the building and finally see its oldest, original stratigraphy.
