Abstract

The reception of temporary architecture objects, which until now were treated only as substitutes for an existing buildings, has changed during recent years. Many realizations are characterized by high aesthetic values, as well by the fact that they positively affect the space in which they operate. Furthermore they can be considered the first step to the revitalization of degraded areas. Usually, the realization of a temporary pavilion is associated with cultural events, accompanying festivals or functioning during summer periods or at unusual locations. From the architects' perspective, designing temporary architecture is an opportunity to demonstrate their creativity by experimenting with a function, form or material, considering the fact, that they are aware that their work will not be subjected to an evaluation in hindsight. Carmody Groarke design studio, founded in London, owes its stature in the architectural industry to temporary objects. In the first years of its operation, these realizations allowed architects to present a specific manifesto of style and a unique approach to aesthetics. Formally cohesive and at the same time expressive buildings represent the consistency of vision of architects in the field of promotion of contemporary architecture, which is conceived to be close to a human, while remaining functional and economical, and intriguing and creative at the same time. Not without significance is their approach to technology and materials used, which with regard to the studio's realizations is in line with the idea of sustainable construction - a trend nowadays put in a line with aesthetics and functionality. The result is a positive reception of their realizations by the public opinion and the appreciation of the studio's activities in the industry, among others thanks to the received prizes. The purpose of this paper is to present temporary realizations carried out by Carmody Groarke design studio, which can be used as a model design method, confirming how the features of sustainable design should be used in a creative way while taking into account economic and social factors. The overriding aim of the work is to show a wide range of possibilities of temporary architecture design, which should not be marginalized, and objects that are created nowadays can be treated equally with permanent objects of architecture.
