Abstract

Pesticides are intended for the control of pests, weeds, pathogens and other factors that cause damage to plants. Pesticides include substances to combat these harmful organisms, but also substances such as growth regulators, desiccants, vegetable and fruit cleaning substances, and substances applied during storage and transportation of production. The use of these pesticides for developed countries is a current concern. The purpose of this study was to conduct an analysis of pesticides used in Romania during the period 2013-2018. In order to have an overview of the national situation, several indicators were analyzed, such as types of pesticides, the quantity used, the area on which pesticides were applied, the pesticide sales and the trade balance in Romania compared to the European Union. The study found that although the surface area of pesticides increased by 10% in 2018 compared to 2013, the amount of pesticides decreased by 27.5% in 2018 compared to 2013. The national trade balance for pesticides is deficient, unlike the surplus registered in the European Union.
