Abstract

The article analyzes the use of photos in social psychology as a visual technology. The work emphasizes that this type of visual technology is used in studies aimed at studying communication, interpersonal cognition, impression management, interethnic relations. Within the framework of these areas of research, photographs of the person's external appearance are suggested, which are proposed to be evaluated, categorized as belonging to certain groups (ethnic, religious, social). The article underline that up to the present time visual technologies are not sufficiently used to study the attitude to various discriminatory practices, including the kind of discrimination that is designated as ethno-lookism (Bzezyan, 2012, Labunskaya, 2016; Pogontseva and Labunskaya, 2017 Pogontseva, 2014, 2017). The article cites the methodology: "Religious categorization and attitudes towards girls with different components of appearance", developed by D.V. Pogontseva (2016). A distinctive feature of this technique is the creation of 2 sets of photographs of girls in hijab and without it, with the help of which the dynamics of relations to them was determined. The article emphasizes that the use of photographs helps identify what is "masked" and is not approved in connection with the development of ideas of tolerance. The article concludes that it is necessary to develop other sets of methods aimed at studying attitudes towards different ethnic groups.
