Abstract

The occupation of the Caucasus by the Russian Empire holds an important place in the 19th century world history. It great influenced on the arrangement of forces in those times in the world and gave rise to Russian EmpireВ’s advance in the south direction, negative results of which we're still suffering today. The Caucasus War appeared to be hard for the population of this region. Many ethnos faced the threat of physical destruction, and some of them, such as Ubbis, disappeared from history, and over half a million people were forced to immigrate to the Ottoman Empire as a result of pressure from the Russian administration. Practically, the demographic picture of this region completely changed. The goal of the research is to reveal the main characteristics of the Russian colonialist policy in the Caucasus and discuss them in the contemporary context because this issue is keeping the actuality based on the activation of the Russian state. В‘Russian IssueВ’ should exactly in this way be solved, to which the fortune of many countries, including Georgia, is tied. The strong impact should be exercised from the external side to place its further development on the democratic way. The existence of weak states in the neighborhood of Russia is a serious seduction for its ruling elite for carrying out aggressive policies towards them. Historical experience confirms that. The 19th century was no exception. Russia, defeated in the Crimea war in 1853-1856 years, fighting practically against the whole Europe, managed to break the Caucasus resistance and subdue it, determining the fortune not only of this region. It represents a serious hindering factor for the regional countries in the way of state building.
