A SIGHT TOWARDS THE DESIGN MUSEUM. THINKING BIG OR THINKING SMALL?

Abstract

Museums can be regarded as a tool that, beyond presenting sections of art and culture, have an important role to inform and connect with elements that generate tendencies at a local or general level; mentally and emotionally. They promote new ideas, new information, they promote local aspects. Museums are institutions with their own identity, leading to the creation of new phenomena in the social framework (through exhibitions and a varied type of organized events). The study is centered around those specific museums-exhibitions with a product-design theme, furniture and interior design; it discusses features belonging to the urban culture, but also to those part of the traditional culture; industrial and crafted objects. Interesting perspectives can be found on this topic, in different areas of the world; the present study tries to identify common principles that appear at a general level and are also encountered in the Romanian space. We will furthermore detail the mechanisms of generating new trends and their action over the targeted public and moreover, in three different impact scenarios. The influence of large museums such as MoMA, smaller-scale museums, some specific events in the field are thus emphasized; by analysing the Mid-Century Modern phenomena (in furniture and interior design), and the increasing importance of traditional-local elements. General research, analysis and case studies (at theoretical and in situ research level) of specific situations lead us to reveal possible links between the identity (seen as the set of ideas promoted by an institution - defining the characteristics of a space) and the museum - event.
