AT THE MEETING OF FRAGILITY: ELEMENTS FOR AN ETHIC OF RESPONSIBILITY AND SOLIDARITY TOWARDS THE CHALLENGES OF MIGRATION

Abstract

The unprecedented scale of the migrant crisis is appalling. It upsets us and urges us to act. Every day, desperate people tent to cross the boundaries of indifference. For specific situations, they are called refugees. Treated often as a simple problem, it is our brothers and sisters, fragile human beings who need help, and this is urgently. On a global scale, there is impressive solidarity and a genuine desire to help. At the same time, signs of impotence and overload are well known in many places. Public debate has also taken a harsher tone in many cases, which is far from doing justice to the concerns of those seeking protection. Who is responsible for addressing the tragedies and injuries that displaced people face, sharing their fears and uncertainties for the future, and providing tangible relief for their suffering? It is to these questions that the article will try to formulate answers, knowing however that the issues are very complex. After a brief overview of the concept of stranger, the article will address some aspects concerning immigration policies and the methods of selection, reception and integration of immigrants, emphasizing the concept of responsibility (individual and collective) in sharing these missions. The research findings identify the theoretical and strategic return of hospitality as a solution to the suffering and humanitarian challenges of migration and living together in a context of multiculturalism.
