DEVELOPING STUDENTS SKILLS IN TODAYS MODERN SCHOOLS
Abstract
Pervasive changes seem to bring about an increase in the social demand for talented and gifted individuals able to digest an overwhelming delug of information. Such individuals are characterised by a high degree of independence, openness to new experience as well as rational thinking. This state of things implies some educational practices. It might be said that schools, by virtue of their missions, are expected to teach students to effectively apply and make use of the knowledge and skills acquired during the learning process. There is a continuously growing need for gifted persons possessing cognitive ability and whose development and stimulation require a high level of both parental support and school engagement. According to some assumptions in the literature regarding the ability models, every effort should be made to cultivate talents and human potential, in particular by school environments. Nevertheless, the question arises whether todays modern schools are a place to improve the development of young peoples skills and talents? The author makes an attempt to answer this question by identifying both appropriate educational activities and the ones that do not help unleash the potential and talents of gifted students, owing to the transmission and replication approaches to teaching. Empirical research reveals that teaching activities designed to stimulate the development of skills in students emerge spontaneously during the lesson. Moreover, the activities motivating higly able learners seem to emrace key ideas of general didactics.
