RECENT TRENDS IN TRAINING VOCATIONAL EDUCATORS IN RUSSIA
Abstract
The primary objectives of this paper are as follows: 1) to analyze the challenges, priorities and modern trends in training vocational educators in Russia; 2) to describe the experience of implementing innovative teaching methods in the educational process at Kalashnikov Izhevsk State Technical University while training vocational educators; 3)to assess the efficacy of the pedagogy through qualitative and quantitative students’outcomes; 4) to discuss our experience and give recommendations for organizing trainee-student self-study and pedagogical pre-service practice. To evaluate the efficacy of such innovative methods as interdisciplinary e-projects and interactive pedagogical trainings, we used quantitative and qualitative assessment. A set of quantitative pre- and post-surveys were administered for students in order to evaluate their learning outcomes and competencies development. Students’ motivation and attitudes were evaluated through questionnaires, interviews and discussions. An expert group appraisal method was used to define assessment components. Our experiments showed that interdisciplinary e-projects contributed considerably to developing students’ English skills and ICT competency; they also reinforced their motivation for learning English. In addition, suggested pedagogical trainings provided development of students’ pedagogical competency at higher levels (system, professional system and professional creative levels). The article contributes to the theory of organizing students’ self-study and pre-service practice of future vocational educators. It also formulates the main challenges and perspectives for educating vocational teachers in Russia.
